Massachusetts’ North Middlesex Regional School District Launches New Partnership with Discovery Education Supporting the Inquiry Approach to Social Studies Instruction
–District Teachers and Students in Grades 6-8 to Receive Access to New Digital Curriculum Providing Rigorous, Relevant, and Engaging Social Studies Resources–
Silver Spring, Md. (February 10, 2020) – Massachusetts’ North Middlesex Regional School District today announced the launch of a new partnership with Discovery Education – the global leader in standards-aligned digital curriculum resources, engaging content, and professional learning for K-12 classrooms. Through this new partnership, 6-8 grade Social Studies educators across the district are now empowered with a rigorous, relevant, and engaging digital Social Studies curriculum they can use to create learning environments that mirror students’ use of technology outside the classroom.
The North Middlesex Regional School District covers approximately 80 square miles on the New Hampshire/Massachusetts border and serves 3,100 students from the Massachusetts towns of Ashby, Pepperell, and Townsend. To support efforts to create learning environments that support an inquiry-based approach to Social Studies instruction and feature lessons aligned to the 2018 Massachusetts History and Social Studies Framework, North Middlesex Regional School District educators in grades 6-8 are integrating the award-winning Social Studies Techbook into classroom instruction.
Used by more than 9.5 million students worldwide during the 2018-2019 school year, Discovery Education’s Techbooks are fully interactive, comprehensive digital curriculums. Updated regularly at no additional cost, Discovery Education’s Techbooks include detailed lesson plans, hands-on activities, digital simulations, and robust teacher supports that immerse students in inquiry-driven instruction.
Discovery Education’s Social Studies Techbook utilizes an inquiry-based instructional approach that emphasizes informational text literacy, analytical writing, and problem-solving skills that students will apply in the classroom and beyond. Each subject area includes primary source documents and activities, digital investigations, multimedia reference library, interactive maps, and more.
“Providing all students access to a consistent, rigorous curriculum is one of the key objectives of our district’s Strategic Plan,” said Nancy Milligan, North Middlesex Regional School District Assistant Superintendent. “Our new Social Studies Techbooks not only supports this goal and our effort to implement the inquiry-based approach to Social Studies instruction we believe our students need, it also encourages students’ civic engagement and provides opportunities for the development of critical-thinking skills. We are looking forward to continuing to find new ways to integrate this exciting resource into classroom instruction.”
Educators will also be supported in their efforts to create digital learning environments by the Discovery Education Community. A global community of education professionals, the Discovery Education Community connects members across school systems and around the world through social media, virtual conferences, and in-person events, fostering valuable networking, idea sharing, and inspiration.
“Discovery Education is incredibly excited to launch this new partnership,” said John David Son, Discovery Education’s Senior Manager of Education Partnerships. “Massachusetts’ school systems are part of a nationwide movement to create dynamic digital Social Studies lessons that engage students and prepare them for civic life, and we are eager to continue our work with the talented team in this dynamic school system.”
