$10,000 Awarded to Title 1 School for Virtual Financial Literacy Education
Jackson Charitable Foundation Recognizes Potter-Burns Elementary School in Pawtucket, RI as the 2020 Money Smart Kids Challenge Winner
Silver Spring, Md. (Monday, October 5, 2020) – Jackson Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit with the mission to advance financial knowledge on a national scale, today announced Potter-Burns Elementary School in Pawtucket, RI as the winner of the 4th annual Cha-ChingTM Money Smart Kids Pledge Challenge.
The Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Challenge presents K-6 schools in the United States the opportunity to receive a $10,000 grant from Jackson Charitable Foundation to spark financial literacy education at their school, along with $1,000 designated for a philanthropic donation of the school’s choosing. Designed for elementary school educators, families, and community members to showcase their financial literacy commitments, the Challenge fosters virtual collaboration by enabling entrants to vote online daily to increase their school’s chance of winning.
“Cha-Ching unites communities around financial literacy with fun digital resources that foster virtual collaboration,” said Danielle Robinson, Executive Director, Jackson Charitable Foundation. “We are cheering for the students of Pawtucket as they learn to ‘earn, save, spend and donate’ as the winners of the 2020 Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Challenge.”
“The 2020 Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Challenge empowers our school with the financial literacy and technological resources needed to educate students and close the equity gap,” said Dr. Mark Andrade, Principal of Potter-Burns Elementary School. “Winning the Challenge exemplifies the power of community collaboration in coming together virtually to support Potter-Burns Elementary School and all its students in their pursuit of a secure financial future.”
To celebrate, Potter-Burns Elementary School will be hosting a virtual event for students, teachers, and community members featuring a virtual check presentation and financial literacy activity. As the contest winner, Potter-Burns Elementary School intends to use the Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Challenge grant and donation money as follows:
– $10,000 grant: The school is purchasing laptops for students to engage with a bilingual (English/Spanish) virtual bank application that helps develop skills in budgeting and saving, set financial goals, and practice accounting.
– $1,000 donation: The students selected Pawtucket Backpackers, an organization reducing hunger among Pawtucket schoolchildren by providing supplemental food during weekends and school vacations, as the recipient of the charitable funds to underscore the importance of philanthropy.
The Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Challenge supplements an educational partnership with Discovery Education providing no-cost digital resources for use in the anywhere classroom. Designed for educators and families to grow financial skills in K-6 students with fun and engaging videos, lessons, and activities, Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids offers millions of students the knowledge, tools, and practice they need to make informed decisions to reach their goals and dreams.
“Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids gives students the resources to think critically about earning, saving, donating, and spending money,” said Lori McFarling, President of Corporate & Community Partnerships at Discovery Education. “We are proud to partner with Jackson Charitable Foundation to provide communities across the country with innovative financial literacy tools as a pathway for lifelong success through healthy money habits.”
